Universal Insurance Holdings reported improved second-quarter results for 2026. Its net combined ratio fell to 91.6% from 97.8% a year earlier, while direct premiums written rose 4.1%. A lower combined ratio means claims and expenses consumed a smaller share of earned premium. Universal said favorable claims and litigation trends helped the quarter.

That is encouraging evidence for Florida's property insurance market. It is not a promise that every homeowner will get a lower premium, easier approval, or broader coverage at renewal.

Key Takeaway

One carrier's better results can point to a healthier market without changing the underwriting questions attached to a specific home. Roof age, inspection records, claims, occupancy, coverage choices, and the timing of the renewal review still matter.

If your Florida home insurance renewal is coming up, send the declarations page and renewal offer early. We can review the real file before the deadline gets tight.

What Universal reported for the second quarter

In its July 23 earnings release, Universal reported:

  • A 91.6% net combined ratio, down 6.2 points from the second quarter of 2025
  • $621.3 million in direct premiums written, up 4.1%
  • A net loss ratio of 64.8%, down 7.5 points
  • $59.2 million in net income available to common stockholders, up from $35.1 million

Universal attributed its favorable claims and litigation trends to Florida's legislative changes. The company separately said more favorable reinsurance rates supported its outlook.

Insurance Journal's July 30 report added that Universal and American Platinum together had 590,893 Florida policies at the end of the quarter, almost 6% more than a year earlier.

These are company-level figures. They help explain the direction of Universal's business, but they do not answer what will happen on one address.

What the Universal results do not tell a homeowner

A carrier can report better overall results while still reviewing each home on its own details. A renewal or new quote may depend on the property's location, roof, construction, wind features, claims, occupancy, replacement cost, requested limits, and inspection history.

The report does not mean:

  • Every Florida home insurance premium will fall
  • Universal or another carrier will accept every property
  • Underwriting requirements have disappeared
  • A cheaper quote will have the same deductibles, roof terms, water limits, or coverage

For broader context, read our 2026 Florida insurance market report. If the renewal price changed, use the Florida home insurance renewal increase guide to compare the premium and coverage together.

Five things to prepare before a Florida home insurance renewal

Do not wait for the final week to find the records that explain the property.

1. Current declarations page and renewal offer

The declarations page shows the current limits, deductibles, endorsements, mortgagee, and policy term. The renewal offer shows what the carrier plans to change. Send both so the comparison starts with the actual policy.

2. Roof age and completed-work records

Gather the roof permit, contractor invoice, closing document, or other record that supports the installation year and material. If repairs were completed, keep the invoices and photos that document the work.

3. Wind mitigation and 4-point reports you already have

Send the reports you already have and let the agent or carrier confirm whether an updated inspection is needed. If you replaced the roof or added storm protection, an updated report may document features that an older file does not show. Our Florida wind mitigation guide explains what the inspection records.

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation says the revised Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form took effect April 1, 2026. The form is valid for up to five years if the structure has not materially changed and the report is accurate. Send what you have first rather than ordering a new inspection on a guess.

4. Claim and repair details

Have dates, loss descriptions, repair status, and supporting invoices ready for recent claims. If a claim is open or repairs are incomplete, say so early. A clean explanation is more useful than making the reviewer guess.

5. Changes to the home or how it is used

Tell the agent about renovations, additions, square-footage changes, vacancy, rental use, short-term rental activity, business use, or a change in occupancy. Those details can affect which questions the carrier asks.

Want the complete document list? Use our Florida renewal checklist, then send the current policy and renewal offer when you are ready for a side-by-side review.

Better market news still calls for a clean renewal file

Universal's quarter is good market news, but it does not predict the next bill. Organize the renewal packet early enough to compare price, deductibles, roof terms, water limits, lender details, and coverage without rushing.

If you are starting a new quote instead of reviewing an existing renewal, use the Florida home insurance quote documents checklist.

Florida home insurance renewal questions

Do Universal's results mean my Florida home insurance renewal will cost less?

No. Universal's company-wide results are encouraging market evidence, but they do not determine the price, eligibility, coverage, or renewal decision for an individual home.

Is Florida's property insurance market improving in 2026?

Universal's second-quarter results are one positive data point. Conditions still vary by carrier, property, location, roof, claims history, and requested coverage.

What documents should I have ready for a Florida home insurance renewal?

Start with the current declarations page and renewal offer. Add roof records, wind mitigation and 4-point reports you already have, claim and repair details, lender information, and any changes in occupancy or use.

When should I start reviewing my Florida home insurance renewal?

Start when the renewal offer arrives. Early review leaves time to check property details, request missing records, compare coverage, and coordinate lender or escrow requirements.
