Lower your Homeowners Insurance Cost

Are you looking for ways to lower your Home Insurance Rates?

Before you begin chipping away at important coverage to reduce your Homeowners Insurance cost, speak with your agent about possible wind mitigation credits. These credits can provide significant savings to reduce your policy premium.

So what are Wind Mitigation Credits?

Wind Mitigation Credits can offer savings available from Florida insurance companies for building features that reduce damage during high wind events like hurricanes. Building features that reduce wind damage and can lower wind insurance premiums include:

Age of Roof Covering
Rood Deck Attachment
Roof Shape
Roof to wall attachment
Opening Protection (windows, Doors, Garage Doors)
Secondary Water Resistance

How do I know if I qualify for Wind Mitigation Credits?

Some credits you can easily determine on your own. If you roof is 2002 or newer (1994 or newer for Miami-Dade or Broward Counties) you will qualify for the Age of Roof Covering Credit. If you Roof Slopes on all 4 sides then you will qualify for the Roof Shape discount. Others discounts are not as easily determined and will require inspection your attic. A Licensed Inspector can determine which credits your home will receive. After his inspection he will provide you with A Wind Mitigation Form (see example here) that you will provide to your insurance agent or carrier. They will then apply the credit to your policy and will reduce your rate. These discounts will remain for the life of the policy and you will continue to receive the savings on each renewal.

So How Much Can I Save?

You savings will depend on the features your home. I have seen many clients save between 60%-82% on the wind portion of their premium. The amount of money you save every year can be substantial considering a large portion of your Homeowners Insurance premium comes from wind coverage. You can do a quick savings analysis with this Wind Insurance Savings Calculator.

How Do I get started?

First you need to have your home inspected. I recommend a company called My Safe Home Inspection. From our experience My Safe Home Inspection has the most reasonable priced inspections. If you explain to the them that you were referred from Greene & Associates Insurance you will be offered a reduced rate. Once you receive your inspection, forward it to your Agent or Carrier and your discounts will be applied. Its very simple and will provide savings year after year.
